Bill Gates Asks Congress for More Tech-Worker Visas

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates urged Congress to allow more H-1B immigration visas for high-tech workers educated in the U.S. at taxpayer expense. Gates said if foreign workers can't get H-1B visas, Microsoft will hire in their countries. Gates told the Northern Virginia Technology Council that the white space between TV signals should be for Wi-Fi.

High-Tech Visas

"It makes no sense to educate people in our universities, often subsidized by U.S. taxpayers, and then insist they return home," Gates told the House Science and Technology Committee at a hearing Wednesday. Gates has been a leading proponent of dramatically increasing the number of H-1B temporary visas issued to foreign computer scientists, allowing them to work in the United States.

During Gates' testimony, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) pushed back, saying those foreign experts will take jobs away from Americans. "If we bring [in] more people from the outside, will it not also depress the wages in our own country that people like yourself would have to pay your employees?"

"No," said Gates firmly. "These top people are going to be hired. It's just a question of what country they are hired in. When we bring in these world-class engineers, we create jobs around them. The B and C students are the ones who get those jobs around these top engineers. And if these top engineers are forced to work in India, we will hire the B and C students from India to work around them."

Push for White Space

Then it was off to the Northern Virginia Technology Council, where Gates and Microsoft Chief Research and Strategy Officer Craig Mundie made a push for adoption of technology to deliver wireless Internet over white space -- the vacant frequencies that provide buffers between television broadcasts.

"White-space activity today is sort of our last hope to get some good spectrum," Mundie said. "The only way to do it is to use the unused TV channels and very smart radios. Ultimately the public will pay the tab, either because we fall behind as a society or we have to make extraordinary adjustments to catch up."

Gates said the white-space spectrum offers a good solution for rural areas in the U.S. "We're hopeful that [white space] will be made available so that Wi-Fi can explode in terms of its usage, even out into some of these less-dense areas, where distance has been a big problem for Wi-Fi," Gates said.

Hi viewers,I just found out last night that last week, my daughter’s boyfriend slammed her head against his car window a few times while they were arguing. She isn’t hurt now, but I am very worried about her. My daughter knows this is wrong but she believes it won’t happen again. My daughter is 18, so I can’t make her do anything. But what can I do?

You’re obviously right to be concerned for your daughter. While she may really believe this won’t happen again, this isn’t usually the case with physical abuse.

If you can, discuss the situation in a very low pressure way with her and ask if she might consider giving loveisrespect a call. A peer advocate can talk to her about abusive relationships and help her make a plan to safely end this relationship when she’s ready. All of our calls and chats are confidential. She doesn’t even have to give her name.

Some things you might suggest to your daughter:

* Try not to be alone with her boyfriend.

* Keep a cell phone with her and use it to call for help if needed.

* Try talking to a counselor locally (alone).

This is truly a difficult situation for a parent. Trying to force your daughter to make a decision about this relationship will likely only push her further from you. Hi guys,Really i am happy to share this article .Finland is seeing a huge investment potential in Tamil Nadu and will hold talks with government officials on Thursday to explore ways of improving trade and commerce.“A lot of Finnish companies have already made enormous investments in India, especially Chennai, and we want to improve upon these contacts as we see an enabling business environment in Tamil Nadu,” Paavo Vayrynen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development of Finland.Mr. Vayrynen, who is on a six-day visit to India, is heading a high-level business delegation that is on a trade and investment promotion mission. The delegation, which includes Asko Numminen, Finland’s Ambassador to India, visited the Nokia plant at Sriperumbudur on Wednesday. Nokia is the most visible Finnish business brand in India, besides Wartsila and Kone. The volume of Finnish investments in India stands at $800 million, which, according to the Minister, is “too small, given the potential”. “Unlike other countries, there is not much bureaucratic delay here, though the poor infrastructure may pose a problem for investors. Our investments in Tamil Nadu are, perhaps, higher than in any other State. Chennai is our most important investment destination,” he says.The delegation would also like to see a parallel rise in Indian investments in their country. “Indian investors have done surprisingly well in Finland. We can be the Indian investor’s gateway to the European Union, Russia and the United States. With Finnair planning to fly to more Indian cities in the near future, connectivity will no longer pose a problem.” Indian investments in Finland are mostly in the IT sector.
